Stereo Edition Schematics and Construction Information

The Pico Compressor Stereo Edition is Offered as A Bare Circuit Board

This is the Stereo Edition of the Pico Compressor based on the original mono design. Like it's predecessor, the Stereo Edition uses a pair of the smooth-sounding THAT4301 Analog Engine® dynamics processors which include both a high-quality Blackmer® VCA and natural-sounding RMS detector.

The Stereo Edition's level detectors are linked using "True Power Summing" to provide rock-solid stereo imaging and precise level management based solely on the left and right channels combined RMS energy. By summing each channel's power, gain changes are not affected by inter-channel polarity or phase correlation. The result is smooth, natural-sounding stereo compression.

The Stereo Edition is designed exclusively for two channel program level control and is ideal for gentle "soft knee" stereo bus compression or mastering.  RMS, peak-like timings, and a new program-adaptive "Auto" attack-release setting provide numerous possibilities.

New to the Pico Compressor Stereo Edition are balanced inputs and outputs using the THAT1246 line receiver and THAT1646 OutSmarts
® driver
. The 1646's high current differential outputs can also be used to directly drive output transformers.

Also new to the Pico Compressor Stereo Edition are an Auto Attack-Release circuit using a "non-linear capacitor." This circuit acts like a large capacitor for small level changes and small capacitor for large changes making the Pico Compressor truly program-adaptive.

For retro builds using mechanical Gain Reduction metering the Stereo Edition now provides a variable gain buffer to drive analog meters.

This is a bare PC board and does not include any components. We do have the THAT4301 and Gain Reduction LED Meter available. Most of the passive components can be purchased from Mouser Electronics and a bill-of-materials import tool is available within the reference pages.
